Fluorite - The name comes from Latin, "to flow," because when it melts, it flows easily. It is fluoride of calcium, CaF2. This sample comes from southern Illinois near Rosiclaire. In this locality, fluorite is associated with other minerals which include galena, sphalerite, and calcite. Cubic and octahedra forms are the most common forms of fluorite. It comes in many colors which include purple, green, blue, yellow, white and colorless varieties. In the cave-in rock area, purple and yellowish white fluorite are commonly the dominate colors. It is used as a primary source of fluorine, and in the steel and ceramic industry. | |||||||||||||||||||||
